An airline control valve allows you to adjust the amount of air intake to the pump which enables you with the ability you to fine tune foamate and thus skimmate consistency. More air will allow for a dryer, more dense foamate and a darker more concentrated skimmate. Less air will allow more water to pass through the skimmer and less air to be taken in so that a higher water level and a thinner “wetter” foamate is achieved. This setting will produce a clearer, less concentrated skimmate which is ideal for removing water born algae and suspended debris often produced after cleaning the glass or substrate. The airline valve can also help in controlling over-foaming problems in new aquaria, aquaria with sudden heavy bio-loads (i.e. fresh live rock), addition of foaming agents (i.e. Amquel, Novaqua, Trace Elements, filter media with chemical residue, etc.).
